Installation & Launch

Why do I get the following error trying to install KG – “Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers”?

  • By default Apple has changed the security settings to only allow installation of apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers.
  • To temporarily get around the error message, control-click the application and choose Open. Click the Open button in the warning dialog that appears.
  • To change this permanently go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy. On the General Tab click the little lock in the lower left corner to unlock the general preference pane. Then select the Anywhere radio button beneath Allow applications downloaded from.

Can I install a single-user version on multiple computers?

If you have a single-user license, you can install the software on one computer at work, as well as a home or laptop computer (provided you are the only one who uses the computer at work). If the software is installed on a lab computer, a second copy cannot be installed.

Transferring the software to a new computer

  • Mac version
  • Use the installer to install KaleidaGraph on the new computer. It is also possible to copy the KaleidaGraph folder from the Applications folder on the old computer over to the new computer. To copy over the settings, copy over the KaleidaGraph Preferences folder from the (user):Library:Preferences folder.
  • After it is installed, it should be deleted from the old computer.
  • Windows version
  • Use the installer to install KaleidaGraph on the new computer. The KaleidaGraph folder could be copied over to the new computer, but this will not get the registry information updated, so icons will not look correct, and the program will not get added to the Start menu.
  • To copy over the settings, copy over the files in the Users/(user)/AppData/Roaming/Synergy Software directory and in the Users/(user)/AppData/Local/VirtualStore/Program Files/Synergy Software/ directory. To see these locations, you will need to turn on the Show hidden files, folders, and drives setting. To access this setting, in Windows Explorer, go to the Organize menu, click Folder and search options, and click the View tab.
  • After it is installed, it should be deleted from the old computer.

After I downloaded the installer it seems to hang on a Mac. Why?

  • It could be a quarantine issue because the file was downloaded.
  • Copy the original .dmg file to the hard drive.
  • Eject any KaleidaGraph disk images listed under the Devices portion of the Finder window.
  • Open the .dmg file that was copied to the hard drive.
  • If you still have problems, copy the actual installer to the hard drive and run it from there.

The Windows installer gives an error about the ASIFONT file.

Windows is preventing us from writing the font file to the computer. Just click Ignore to get past the error. It should not impact the operation of the software in any way.

Is it possible to do a silent install?

You can use the Run command and enter the path to the KG installer, followed by -s. For example: C:\KG45Setup.exe -s. If you are using quotes for the path, the -s must be outside of the quotes.

It is not possible to bundle the serial number and authorization code into the installer. This would still need to be entered once the program is installed.

I get an error that PowerPC applications are no longer supported.

The installers for v4.0 and earlier cannot be used under OS 10.7 or later. If you have KaleidaGraph 4 on another computer, you can copy your KaleidaGraph 4.0 folder onto the new computer and run the v4.1.3 updater that is available from our web site.

Users of v3.6 or earlier will need to purchase an upgrade. If you get the physical upgrade, you will get a CD that will perform a complete installation.

Why am I getting an error that the disk image file could not be opened because it is not recognized?

  • There could have been an issue during the download. Try downloading the file again, making sure not to try opening it before the download is complete.
  • It could be a permissions issue on the computer. Make sure you are logged in as the administrator. If you still have problems, use the Disk Utility application to repair the permissions on the hard drive. Then try downloading the file again.

I am running into problems trying to install an update/upgrade.

  • Make sure you exit out of KaleidaGraph before running the updater.
  • If the updater is taking a long time to run, disconnect any external or network drives and try running it again.
  • Mac updater/upgrades – Make sure the Applications folder is specified as the destination. You will get an error if you try to install at the root level of the hard drive.
  • Version 4.5 upgrade for Mac – If you are upgrading from v4.1.x, you need to click No when the updater asks if you are updating v4.0 and Yes when asked if you want to upgrade v4.1 or re-install v.4.5.
  • Version 4.1.3 updater for Mac – If you are updating v4.1.x, you need to click No when the updater asks if you are updating v4.0 and Yes when asked if you want to re-install v.4.1.3.
  • Launch your current copy of KaleidaGraph and verify that you don’t already have the version you are trying to update to. The version number appears on the splash screen as well as in the About KaleidaGraph dialog.
  • Reinstall you current copy of KaleidaGraph, personalize it, and try running the updater again.
  • The KaleidaGraph for Windows updater expects to find a file called KGraph.exe. If you rename the KaleidaGraph executable, the updater will fail.

Why do I get an access denied error (1008:5, -5000) when trying to install KaleidaGraph under OS X?

  • Try installing directly into the Applications directory. You cannot install it at the root level of the Macintosh HD or you will get this error.
  • You may not have administrator access or the permissions are not set properly on one of the directories. You can use the following steps to repair the permissions:
  1. Open the Disk Utility application (/Applications/Utilities).
  2. Click the First Aid tab.
  3. Select the Max OS X volume.
  4. Click Repair Disk Permissions. Quit Disk Utility when finished.

What files are opened when I launch KaleidaGraph?

Four settings files (KG Style, KG Macros, KG Script and KG Layout) are opened automatically at launch, provided they are located in the same folder as KaleidaGraph or in the KaleidaGraph Preferences folder (Macintosh version only). In the Windows version, they can also be located in the \Synergy Software\KaleidaGraph 4.1 directory. The exact path to this directory varies between operating systems, so it may be necessary to use the Search feature to locate the Synergy Software folder.

KaleidaGraph looks in the same folder as the application for any settings files before looking in the KaleidaGraph Preferences folder (on the Macintosh). In the Windows version, they can also be located in the \Synergy Software\KaleidaGraph 4.1 directory. The exact path to this directory varies between operating systems, so it may be necessary to use the Search feature to locate the Synergy Software folder. This enables you to easily drop in custom files (which must be named appropriately) and have them used at launch.
