Long-standing KaleidaGraph Supporter Praises the Graphing and Data Analysis Program on 'Futures in Biotech' Podcast

Futures in Biotech (also known as FiB) is a show on the TWiT network, a website which contains over 15 different shows, all covering some aspect of technology.

Hosted by Marc Pelletier, co-founder and VP-Chief Scientific Officer of Aeromics, LLC, FiB explores the rapidly changing world of biotech, with a focus towards getting a better understanding of who we are and where we are going. The living world will soon be a true substrate for engineering. Our world will change, and so will we. FiB brings a first hand account from the scientists that are moving us into this new technological era - the era of biotech.

FiB has featured such renowned scientists as Susan Lindquist, Leonard Guarente, Larry Smarr, George Church, Lee Hood, Michio Kaku, Nobel Laureates Eric Kandel (2000), Mario Capecchi (2007), Oliver Smithies (2007) and Marty Chalfie (2008), and even two moonwalkers, Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11) and Senator Harrison Schmitt (Apollo 17).

Throughout the month of February, KaleidaGraph is featured on the FiB show in special advertising messages augmented with personal comments from Dr. Pelletier, a long-standing user and huge fan of KaleidaGraph.

“I use KaleidaGraph everyday to fit the data from our cell assays,” says Pelletier. “I managed to get through undergrad, masters, Ph.D., and 5 years of postdoctoral work without ever learning excel - because I knew Kaleidagraph. This is a true story. I did a lot of math - and excel is horrible at math. We use KaleidaGraph daily, and the curve fitting is so simple that we can test various models to better extract physiological parameters etc. Curve fitting is very limited in Excel, and unlimited in KaleidaGraph.”

If you like Futures in Biotech you can subscribe to it using iTunes or other netcast/podcast programs. You can also watch the show on TV using an Apple TV or even a ROKU box.

All the shows are free. TWiT.tv is supported by advertising and listener donations. A small $2/month recurring donation through Paypal keeps them afloat and shows your support for what they're trying to do. They limit the advertising to no more than once per half hour, and stick with companies they know and use themselves.

What Is A Netcast (Podcast)?
Netcasting (also known as "podcasting") is a great way of distributing audio and video programming automatically. When a site (like TWiT Network) offers a netcast feed you can subscribe to the feed using netcasting software and any new items will be automatically downloaded to your computer. If you have a portable audio player, the files can also be copied to the player.

However, and this is a common area of confusion, no iPod or other MP3 player is required (that's one of the reasons we prefer the term "netcast" to "podcast"). You can listen to the audio and watch the video on your computer just as you would any digital media. In fact, with TWiT Network's feeds you don't even need special software. Just click the feed link and download the show you want directly, or use the player built into every page.

If you decide you want to listen to a TWiT Network show every time it comes out, you might consider using a netcasting or podcasting client. Think of it as Tivo for Internet audio and video. You subscribe to content you want by visiting the web site and getting the netcast URL. Your netcast software automatically downloads any new shows and copies them to your MP3 player. There's always something new and interesting to listen to and you never have to check the web to see when a new show is available.

By far the easiest way to subscribe to netcasts is to install the free iTunes program for Windows or Macintosh. Once you've installed iTunes you can visit the TWiT page at the iTunes Music Store for links to all our shows. (Don't worry, even though they're in the iTunes Store, the netcasts are free!)
