KaleidaGraph, A Workhorse Application for these Uncertain Times
AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR CELL BIOLOGY, Washington, DC, December 9, 2001 - In the world of scientific inquiry, monetary resources have always been scarce and time inadequate. The medical needs of the aging, and very vocal, baby-boomers have put pressure on the scientific community to deliver quick, effective results. The additional stresses of recession, terror, and warfare have intensified the need for best-of-class solutions to the realities of the research environment. KaleidaGraph is a standout at addressing those needs.
KaleidaGraph has always been known for its economy, ease of use and robust feature set. It is economical enough to be a standard desktop resource at leading drug companies and most university laboratories. Priced before many of its bloated competitors came to market, KaleidaGraph has always been the least expensive of the technical graphing solutions. During a proud development history of 14 years, the purchase of KaleidaGraph and all of its updates would equate to an investment of less than $20.00 per year, in return for consistent technical productivity.
Let's examine an average research workday from the KaleidaGraph viewpoint: A scientific experiment is in progress and our researcher is trying to balance her lab hours with other responsibilities to educate and report. The scientific instrumentation which records the experimental data is storing thousands of datapoints per hourin an Excel spreadsheet. There are new graduate students to assimilate into the lab and an important conference is rapidly approaching. this is the environment in which KaleidaGraph shines. The lab staff masters the basic functionality of KaleidaGraph in less than an hour using the Quick Start Guide that walks users through the entering and importing of data, plot customization, applying curve fits and error bars, and exporting the plot. Most hav not even cracked the documentation because, well, they are busy graduate students, and the use of KaleidaGraph is so intuitive.
An Excel spreadsheet opens directly from within KaleidaGraph, so the data is readily available in the data window. But someone has sent some collateral data from a neighboring lab, so that text file is easily imported into the application as well. The appropriate 2D graph type is selected from the Gallery menu and the students proceed to manipulate any and all of the graph elements, as necessary, to meet the very exacting standards for the conference publication.
Upon completion of the prototype graph, a template is saved so that succeeding runs of data can quickly be graphed in the same style. The students then analyze the relationship of the data using a Student t-test and apply a custom curve-fit to see the data trends.
Formula scripts now help to automate the process of importing data, creating plots, exporting, and printing. The experiment proceeds and KaleidaGraph handles the large data load with speed and accuracy. Now it's time for final conference preparations. KaleidaGraph can link directly to PowerPoint, MS Word, and more, so posters and documentation are finished in a timely fashion. In a research world dominated by Microsoft Office, it's reassuring to know that KaleidaGraph can competently fill its "scientific gap", yet do so effortlessly day after day. It's also nice to know that our professor and her staff have arrived at the conference prepared and un-frazzled. Perhaps you'll meet them visiting our booth (number 994).

A suite of TCP/IP tools, built upon support for the Apple Macintosh® Communications Toolbox, was added beginning in 1990. We have continued to support the growing TCP/IP standard by adding a single integrated application for accessing essential Internet services like mail and news. The VersaTerm products now represent a comprehensive solution for solving a wide spectrum of connectivity needs both in networked configurations and from remote sites.
In the last year our entire product line has reaped the benefits of our ten-year tradition of design excellence and dependable performance. VersaTerm won the MacWorld Editors' Choice Award in October 1993 in an evaluation with nine packages providing TCP/IP features, and followed that with a second Editors' Choice in August 1994 for Internet Exploration. VersaTilities was a finalist for the MacUser Award for Best New Communications Package in January 1994, and received a MacUser Four-Mouse Award in September 1994 as a Versatile Package of Internet Utilities. KaleidaGraph, our data analysis and graphing application, won the MacWorld World Class Award for Best Scientific-Analysis Software in August of 1994, after a four-mouse review earlier in the year.
"Considering that many technological innovations, including software, frequently experience what I would characterize as a short, boom and bust lifespan, it is very satisfying to have participated in VersaTerm's steady growth over the last ten years. It is particularly sweet to come into this tenth year with the utility and recognition levels for the program running so high," observed Barbara S. Maxwell, VP Marketing. "We are very thankful for the loyal and continued support of our users and colleagues throughout the industry, and we look forward with anticipation to the challenges of the next decade."
